Wonderful ideas from KORG, specific for laptopist... the nanoPad and nanoKontrol looks nifty and handy. Not too sure about the keyboard though I suppose it will do great for non-pianist artists. KORG should then come up with a USB distro-port or something if not we are talking about 3 USB connections. Hmmm how about 3 USB to Firewire ... KORG can call it nanoUFIRE hurhurhur... Damn... Think it's only available in Japan for now. Read the full story on CREATEDIGITALMUSIC.

There are three different controllers in the line:

nanoKEY: 25 keys, transmitting either as MIDI notes or (via a separate mode) Control Change (CC)  messages. Octave shift (natch). Pitch, modulation. And it’s supposed to be velocity-sensitive, too, although we’ll have to get our hands on one to see how sensitive it is.

nanoPAD: 12 pads, supposedly inheriting the terrific sensitivity and feel of the padKONTROL, which is pretty much the favorite pad controller round these parts. Chord Trigger. Control Change mode (as with nanoKEY). There’s even an X/Y touch pad with roll and flam mode, favorite features of the padKONTROL.

nanoKONTROL: 9 faders, 9 knobs, 18 switches, transport controls. (No, really.) MIDI notes, 168 CC messages. There are even attack and decay times for the switches, allowing them to work as faders, filter controls, effects settings, and the like – something I’d love to see on other (full-sized) controllers.

Two-third of TBFKAS dropped by my place (Misse you never turn up!). We doodled and played with gears and decided to mess around and recorded the outcome. So here's a recording of the half hour noise/synthesis/electronic improvisation session (we were just wacking). And so we went crazy on this one, some nice moments featuring the Tenori-on vs Nintendo DS lite mid way through about 17:05 onwards till about 25:30 (Pathein rawks again); and WY had some flair with my Roland SH101 as he concocted some "bleepy-droney-sireny" noises with modulations and for the cat growls at 23:25 onwards :D ... the sherman filterbank 2 seriously bled our ears, with some bird-like talks and glitches of course... Highly disturbing sounds and noises. We dare you to listen through headphones...
Gears featured in this recording:

1) Doepfer A-100 Modular System
2) Sherman Filterbank 2
3) Roland SH101
4) Tenori-on
5) Nintendo DS lite (Elektroplankton)

Recorded with KORG MR-1000; no editing done, what you hear is a live recording of this super doodle-noodle session. Just mastered the levels with a little reverb added to juice it up slightly. Yea, secretly spanking the monkey indeed... if you fancy it, are into gears, interested in Doepfer synthesis + Sherman Filterbank 2 sounds, crazy over filtering sounds, into space odyssey or sci-fi noises, sucker for Nintendo DS lite and Tenori-on bubbly-cute'sy stuffs, or you just want to soak in some chanced noises and pseudo sound art improvisations, you can download it for free by clicking the icon below...

Secretly Spanking The Monkey

There after we went down to S11 for some drinks and food (and ciggies). Talked about indie music, sound art, underground scenes and DIY/Circuit Bending stuffs. All in all, some good time spent!

...

This is a synthesis based live improvisation recording I did at home. This 16+ minute set features the Doepfer A100 Modular System; Sherman Filterbank 2; and MOOG Little Phatty. All synthesis were created and done on the spot except for the LP which I've just used a preset to start with and did modulations and filtering along the way. Recorded on KORG MR1000 and delay was applied post. It's a noise and synthesis based improvisation so it's not the usual music you'll hear on my myspace :) Have a listen:

Catching Rainbows

Two new songs. Exploring more KORG M3 sounds and synthesis. Also explored the drums on M3 a little. No external effects used... all purely M3, just a little sound design on Catching Rainbows, that's all. The grain shift effects are lovely on the M3, I re-designed some parameters so that it glitches...

Hope you guys will enjoy it. Best over headphones...

The KORG M3 pix will be up after Christmas once I've set up the studios... I am paying the Phatty by installment agreement ;) Really, it was unprecedented and unexpected that the LP now lies in my room... what a surprise.

UPDATES:
Well, finally the KORG M3-88 is here! And along came my MAGNUS vintage electric fan organ! Trust me, this thing sounds magical and very charming! And of course the KORG MR-1000 1bit portable recorder! :) Happy me... the mobile mixer rack is here too but no point taking pictures of an empty rack...

[UPDATES]: New download address due to overwhelming downloads!!!... Click HERE for the free download now.

My latest project. This album was cut in 2-3 days, imperfect little pieces of electro-ambient improvisations did entirely on the KORG Triton ST88 and nothing else. I've composed this album in such a short time so that I could give it to my girlfriend who is leaving for vietnam today... as a little gift.

W E A V I N G | 織造

The W E A V I N G project builds on the ideology of minimalism and improvisation. The album is meant to be listened to from top till the end as a sole entity of sounds and melodies. The sub-harmonics, subliminal changes in timbres and the play of sub-frequencies and hyper-frequencies will leave your ears ringing at the end of the sonic experience.

[Click on either of the images to download the entire album for free!]

Feel free to download it and if you will, drop me a note on what you think of it :)

Thanks for the support! Hope you guys will enjoy the album.

Playing around with effects settings on the Triton ST88, discovering new stuffs even after 5 years of using it. The beauty of this workstation...

WHEN THE FLOWERS MOURN

COME MORNING

Again, headphones will serve best :) Hope you guys will enjoy it...

Dedicated to my lovely girlfriend...

A Little Slightly Technical Detail:
I am exploring reverb settings in both pieces actually, exploring the resonance and harmonic timbres as a result of the long feedback and pre-delay, freeing up any band pass filters or eq (usually in reverbs to cut off excessive resonance). I want them "dirty" and "ringing"... I want them unpleasant... but to use them effectively (hopefully) to create something imperfect but yet pleasing. For When The Flowers Mourn, the composition concept is to combine three running (similar but different) motives, which runs all on different keys each. The idea that clashing keys or notes or key signatures is dissonant or "unpleasing" is challenged. The three key signatures that co-exist are Am, Cmaj & Gmaj... yes, all running at the same time, and finally I've programmed the arppegiator to be playing notes that are concurrent with the three key signatures...

Well, when was the last time I post about my synths? Seems like a long time. Anyway, here's what's been going on and I felt it calls for some synths porn again. Mypapers interviewed me for having a fetish for collecting synthesizers... audiophile they call it. Well, not in the strict sense. It was, erm... a bit weird always to be in front of the cameras so again, I felt most uneasy. Anyway it went well though I was told that I mentioned too many technical stuffs and they might have to edit it away to make the programme more accessible. Well, we'll see. Not sure when this programme will be out but heard it will be in September... which episode I am not sure either but I will inform close friends of it when the time comes. Features about 80% of my synths collection (can't display all due to space constraints - about 6 synths not in), demonstrations, synths porn, modular synths and theremin (not in photo YET); getting shy, acting stupid, talking funny... and my fat face. Oh well....

Since it's all set up, I thought I might as well do some shots of them, anyway, what are the chances of putting them all together in a small house like mine? So here you go:

Highway Felo-De-Se

Do listen with a pair of headphones for enhanced experience sonically.

Final track of the COMMONTONES PHASE II. Now awaiting Eric's and LDT's tracks which will come in the next few days. Here's the write-up explaining what's been done:

"This time round I did not use any gear recordings, just samples provided and some soft-synth sound-scaping using Reaktor 5. I've used a couple of LDT's samples, 2 guitar samples and one vocal sample of Eric's. I've pitched them, stretched them, ring modulated them, reversing them till they are just drones. Only Eric's bass guitar sample was left untouched with a little tidying and eq to clean the sample up plus time corrections; and the rest I've used mine... using the guitar synth sample I've provided in Week4, reversing and pitching it all the way up to underlay as the ethereal drone in the back ground. The bass drone get a stereo spread and the square arp get's ring modulated in one track and gated (plus getting the cracking residues of a crackle removal plug-in) in another to get the glitchy clicks. I've also used samples I've provided in the past weeks for the drums. Final touch ups were done by adding Reaktor 5 synths drones, reversing them and such. The loops were edited, warped and got a make over using Sound Forge, mixed on Acid, and mastered on Sound Forge. And here it is, a whiney IDM piece again."

Eric has loaded up week three's music using ONLY samples provided by LDT and me... and I must say they are impressive tracks. For posterity, here they are:

A side note, samples feature Roland MC-303 from LDT and KORG Triton ST88 from me... Eric had re-sequenced my boring drum beats with his Trigger Finger and employing Morphine VST to really screw up the samples. The track rocks! Kudos to Eric! :)

In WEEK 4, all 3 of us will be providing samples and all 3 of us will be cutting a track out each... so that's 3 songs. It will be interesting to see how we interprete the samples and produce the song at the end of next week. Stay tuned. :)

APHELION
Do listen with a pair of headphones for a better experience.

SPUTNIK (German Satellite): Travelling Companion

Two lonely sputniks, orbiting aimlessly
It is at aphelion, that they are the furthest, and the next nearing comes...
When their sputniks finally crossed path and touched
Like children waking up to a new dawn, momentary delight that lasted an eternity...

I suppose, the opening song for the new album (yet to be titled) that I am working on currently, a little collaborative project with my girlfriend where we will counter inspire each other. Me providing music and she providing visuals and text. The title was given to the song by my baby after I've told her the inspiration behind this song. I like the title because it captures the essence of this song and that it tells a little story that she and I share. Thank you baby, this song is for you... Thank you for being such a muse. <3

THE MYOPIC TREE

I would strongly suggest listening with a pair of headphones to experience this piece in entirety.

Composed majority of the parts on KORG Triton ST88, a little sound design, and a little Reaktor 5.

I am starting to work on my new album and it's a collaborative effort between me and my lovely baby. This is a composition inspired by one of her writings, the start of our little project, the first song of many to come in the rest of the year. As some of you might know my roots are in piano compositions and sound design... and my style is experimental. So this first piece is of such norms... it wouldn't dictate the style or mood of the album, and in a bigger picture if it doesn't fit into the album when everything is done, I might take it out. So we shall see. Anyway, hope you'll enjoy this piece of music...

Venir à la Maison [回家] Original Version:

Venir à la Maison [回家] Remixed Version:

Gears: All sound from KORG Radias, KORG Kaoss Pad III, drums from Reaktor 5

DAY 15 entry on COMMONTONES. We are at the mid of this project. It's been fun though taxing. Two versions, version one is without drums and version two is with drums. Sampled 4 tracks onto KP3, played an EP patch on the Radias, improvising and playing live real time during recording and the drums are added post using Reaktor 5.

Yesterday I had creative block. But today my muse had returned. I did not give much thoughts to this piece... just hit the on button, find some sounds, visit my favourite wurly e-piano sounds on the Radias, hit record with the metronome and build track by track... was a brisk... Here's DAY 12 entry on COMMONTONES:

<<再造>>
"Reconstruction"

Gears: KORG Radias, KORG Kaoss Pad III, Humbucker, Reaktor 5, faulty connections; old vocal samples I've recorded.

Today I saw time
Coincidentally I was reading Einstein's Dreams
I revisited a certain time
While sitting in the train cabin reading
I love how fate turns and twists around
And we are merely pawns of this acoursal palette
I saw someone see me in my beads reading Freud
And I was non the wiser till now
I am so very grateful

Today I saw a couple quarelling in public
I wonder why the hassle, why bother

I guess I am dried up already... 11th day, and I am stuck... I actually did 3 reditions... first one didn't sound right, heading no where... dumped... second rendition was crap... dumped... finally settling for this ambient-ish one. Not ace, as I hoped it to be :S but time ran out and I'll have to post so no looking back... bad mix though :( I wish I had more time for this one... So here's DAY 11 of COMMONTONES:

<<棉花糖>>
"Nuages de Sucrerie de Coton"

Using the KORG Radias again, recorded loop on KP3... added the guitar drone in post... and a little Plogue Bidule synthesis...

This is the entry for DAY 10 on COMMONTONES:

<<夜班車>> "Le Tour de Nuit"

Gears used:
KORG Radias, KORG Kaoss Pad III

Yep, entire track done on the Radias with minimal sound design to enhance the mood of the song, to paint the picture. Building on the simple motive of my previous composition in commontones, I wanted to see if I can re-arrange it using the Radias. This is the first time I am using the Radias seriously. I am beginning to love this synth more. Nothing was sequenced except the drums, which was a pattern which I've recorded and processed heavily. This track was recorded while playing live. A couple of hours was all I had so this was the best I could do.

Blog EntryMISSING RAIN - Completed...Apr 1, '07 4:41 PM
for everyone
Finally... the time now is 0430hrs... Below are two tracks composed and arranged for MISSING RAIN, my devised piece in 0501. The first track is the backing track that I am playing piano to during the actual show... The second track is with melody - a mock up piano track recorded for the actors to bring home and familiarise themselves to the dynamics of the song. It's a mock up because I am playing live piano and it's still "improvisational" to a certain extend (depending on the actors' dynamics).

As best I could mix down and master the tracks with limited time (bumping into theatre in a few more hours). Again, the second track is a mock up of the piano playing, I did not pay much attention to mixing this as it would not be used in the show. The first one will be used for the actual show. Here are the finalized tracks cut for theatre space with space acoustics in consideration:

A simple song composed and arranged densely, though directly. The song uses just 3 general chords A, D and E with the exception of a D/F# that happens only once for the more ambiguous beginning. It's not perfect but I hope the actors will like it.

This performance is an honest show with very minimal text. Come with an open mind and let each piece speak to you.
